Our Tribes
The State of North Carolina has eight recognized Indian tribes and four urban Indian organizations shown on the map. The eight tribes are based primarily in rural areas. Based on the Census, over 122,100 American Indians living in North Carolina, the largest population east of the Mississippi River and ranking 7th among states.
To learn more about the tribes the public is welcome to attend the American Indian Heritage Celebration at the N.C. Museum of History each November. The museum also prepared a short video for young people about the history of American Indians in North Carolina.
